Do You Have Natural Curly Or Wavy Hair Or Are You Not Sure?

Do You Have Natural Curly Or Wavy Hair Or Are You Not Sure?
Most often it is all in the hair cut and the right product to use to get that pretty beachy wave, body or curl if you have it naturally.  Many times clients will tell me they don't think they have curly hair until we get the right cut and product in their hair and they are pleasantly surprised :)

Deep Conditioning

Its always good to deep condition your hair once a month especially if you use chemicals on your hair and or use flat irons etc every day.  You can get it done in your hair salon or do it yourself at home.  If you do it at home you want a good conditioning that penetrates in your hair with heat.  A quick conditioner that is for only a few minutes is not enough.  After your shampoo towel dry your hair enough so your hair is not dripping wet.  Apply conditioner throughout, put a plastic cap on your head, a shower cap works great if you have one.  Sit under a hair dryer on high heat for 20 minutes.  During that time the heat keeps your hair shaft open and the conditioning agents will penetrate into the hair.  Rinse well

Expensive Blow Dryers And Curling Irons etc

Expensive Blow Dryers and Curling Irons makes sense to buy when you are a stylist and using the tools all day long on all different kinds of hair.  There are brands on the market that will work fine on your hair if you are using these tools just from home use on yourself.  You wont put all the hours of use on your dryers and irons like a hair salon will.  Most dryers on the market are sufficient enough and for flat irons and regular irons you want to be sure the temperatures are between 392 and 400.  Some lower temps will work on some hair but most of the time you need the higher temps.  Be sure you use styling products that have the
" protective barrier complex" in them to protect your hair from higher heats such as Scruples hair products.  Using the right conditioners and styling aides will protect your hair and keep  your hair hydrated if you tend to get dry or have dry course hair.

keep In mind................

Keep in mind color will not lift color.  If you put dark color on your hair you can not lift it to a lighter shade with hair color, you have to use bleach.  Be very sure you want dark if you tint your hair black or dark brown because if you do it so many times it is almost impossible to lift it without getting a lot of red when your lifting it.  I would always consult with a professional.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Shampoo and Conditioner go hand in hand.  Many do not like conditioner because they feel greasy or their hair does get greasy or weighs their hair down.  Some heads of hair is so fine and soft you feel conditioner isn't needed.  Every one can use conditioner.  If its not working to your benefit than you have the wrong conditioner for your hair.  Protecting you hair in general from brushing, blow drying, heated tools, and the environment alone is necessary.  There are several leave in conditioners that are very light and could possibly give you some body in your hair along with protecting your hair. Do your research and ask a hair stylist what would be best for you.

Value For Your Dollar...

Value For Your Dollar is something everyone is looking at during this struggled economy.  All the more you want to get the best value for your dollar and when it comes to hair product if its cheaper and you buy it and it doesn't work, it ends up under your sink or in the trash.  If you have gone in the salon a few times and you see the product works, buy it.  More often than not it will last just as long or longer then other brands that are cheaper.  If it works its worth every penny!  If you have a family member or friend with the same hair type ask what they use if you see it works for them.  Ask your hair stylist what he/she uses on your hair sometimes you can find it cheaper online if you search it out.

Keratin

Keratin is great for taking frizz out of hair.  But there is some Keratin that does have formaldehyde and even some hair straightening chemicals. So do your research before you get a treatment on the product used and look it up online and you can even call the distributor for questions if you feel you should.  You want to know exactly what is put on your hair and if its for your type of hair.  Also know the maintenance afterwards.  Using a Keratin shampoo and conditioner is necessary and its best to use the same product line of the Keratin that was put on your hair.

Do you ask your stylist to thin your hair?

Do you ask your stylist to thin your hair?  If you have very thick hair thinning your hair can get rid of some bulk, look more tame and cooler in the summer.  But I can say thinning your hair creates bulk as your hair grows out.  So unless you have very thick hair you may want to be sure thinning is what you want.  If you have wavy curly hair when your hair is growing in you will get a lot of bulk because curly wavy hair creates bulk anyway along with the shorter pieces growing in. Just know you have to keep up with hair thinning to keep your tame look.

Are you one of the millions of people that has a ton of hair product under your sink?
When it comes to shampoo and conditioner you wont see huge results right away especially if your hair in need of conditioning.  You want to give it a month to work. As your hair gets repaired and reconditioned your shampoo and conditioner and styling products may need to change.  Seasonal changes will affect your hair which will  mean the product you use may need to change.    Organize what you have according to season and or your hair condition, consider if you are coloring, hi lighting, straightening etc.  Time to spring clean under your sink and get organized , clear out what you know doesn't work, and remember recycle the plastic and if the products are organic or natural you may be able to use it on your pets if you ask your local veterinarian

Frizzy Hair?

Frizzy Hair needs product on it!  Some frizzy hair is dry and the texture is courser, and some is fine and healthy but just frizzy.
So if your hair is dry use hydrating shampoo, a good conditioner, and or a leave in conditioner/serum ( White Tea Magical Serum by Scruples works great)  and a frizz control gel and hair polish/oil type finishing.
If your hair is not dry a shampoo for normal or oily to normal with a daily conditioner or a leave in conditioner that keeps hair soft along with a smoothing gel for frizzy hair.  If you lack body but you still have frizz there in a product by scruples called "Silk Control" that is a huge seller that smooths the hair but still gives you body.

Ashy Color in your Low Lites will happen if you don't use gold and/or reds in your color.  Natural levels and letter A (ash) or N (natural) on the color box will give you some ash tones on top of blonde hair.  In order to get darker shades on blonde hair you must put some red pigment in the color because blonde hair as gray hair there is no red pigment which is needed to darken to brown shades and darker.

Hair Color Knowledge

There are different ways of coloring your hair depending on what result you are looking for. There are color, rinses, color washes, temporary color, permanent color, color cocktail etc.  Color rinses wash out when you shampoo
Color washes are very weak in developer strength so you can freshen up your color and will wash out within  a few weeks depending on how much you shampoo your hair, if you shampoo everyday you will get a week or so.
Semi Permanent Colors are designed to stay in your hair 4-6 weeks, again if you shampoo everyday or have gray hair to cover it will not last a full 4 weeks. Keeping in mind gray hair can be very resistant and a Semi Color may not even work for you
Permanent Color is a higher strength developer designed to open the hair shaft and soften the cuticle so the color molecules will be able to enter the hair strand.  Gray hair coverage is best with permanent hair color.  Sometimes you will get fading if your gray is resistant or you are out in the sun a lot.  But pretty much you will see hair growth when your roots show up and you know its time to color.
Color  Cocktail  is a squirt of a bright color to kick it up notch! Just a kick, a burst of something rich whether its a red, plum, gold etc.

Hair Spray 2

Hair Spray can be used for styling and shaping and also for extra hold.  Extra hold is always good when you are finished with your style and the shaping is good when you want to spray and work with your hair.  Hair Spray that goes on dry is easier to work with and of course going on dry always helps the hair style from falling if its a wet spray.  Living in humid states in the summer humidity resistant hair spray can be very helpful.

Hair Spray Helpful Hints #1

Using a light weight shaping spray you can blow dry your hair and than spray your hair and continue to style with round brush and blower or curling/flat iron.  You can get volume on top of your hair for some puff/height by spraying lightly the root area and over directing with iron in the opposite direction your hair will fall.  This will help you get your style quicker and easier and hold longer.  Remember not to hold the spray can too close to your head so its not all over your scalp.

All about Hair: Caring For Hair Extensions

All about Hair: Caring For Hair Extensions

Caring For Hair Extensions

Caring For Hair Extensions is very important.  First you want to be sure you have real hair, and you want to use a boar bristle hair brush.  You want to sleep at night with your hair braided, or in a pony tail with cloth scrunchies down the pony so the hair will not get tangled while you sleep.  When you wash your hair do it in the shower and work in a downward motion, do not swish your hair around, it will tangle.  Use a good shampoo and conditioner.  If you take good care of your hair and extensions the longer they will last.  We do Micro Bead at Tropical Waves Hair Salon, very nice way to apply them and safer to the hair comparing to some other methods.

Mark Your Calender - 2

My last post was to mark your calender to condition your hair;  you also want to mark your calender to trim your hair.  If you like the style you are wearing you really should keep it trimmed every 4-6 weeks.  If you have the type of hair that grows slow you can go 8-10 weeks.  If you are trying to grow your hair I would skip the one trim date and just follow up with every other cut date.  Now if you do not have healthy hair or your ends tend to split or you have thin hair you should trim every 6-8 weeks and just get a "dusting" which is trimming a minimal amount off but that will help prevent breakage.

Be sure to deep condition each month your hair ;at home or in your salon.  If you don't have the proper conditioning if you choose to do it at home fit that in your budget to get what you need.  Remember wrapping your hair up in a shower cap/plastic cap and applying heat keeps your hair shaft open so your hair can soak up all the nutrients you are trying to feed it.  Your hair needs 15 minutes to drink up all it needs in one treatment.  Its easier and more efficient to have it done in the salon, but if you are on a strict budget you can do it and get good results at home too :)

Lets Talk Hair Sprays

Lets Talk Hair Sprays.  You want to be sure not to spray too close so you don't spray too much on your scalp and over load your hair.  Hair Sprays that go on wet tend to dampen your hair just enough to mess up your hair style.  Dry hair sprays are what you want to find, also you can get firm sprays but still workable while styling.  You don't have to have stiff hair to know its working.  If you wear the type of hair style that you do not want to move, than yes extra hold such as "Rock Hard" that I use on my clients will hold.  Even if you need just a little kick with out real stiff, a dry spray like Rock Hold but sprayed lightly will work also.  So be sure you know what kind of hold you are looking for and look for dry spray :)

Styling Fine Limp and/ or Oily Hair

Styling Fine, Limp, or Oily Hair needs a good Clairfying Shampoo and a light but firm moose or a Thermal Spray.  When you use leave in conditioners and styling aides be sure to comb through your hair so it evenly gets distruibuted throughout your hair strands.
Note: Most of the time fine limp hair is oily so clarifying helps remove oil from your scalp and hair.  This helps in appearance and styling

Tame Curly Hair

Tame Curly Hair can be a little challenging but one word to remember is Product!  Curly Frizzy hair needs hair product on their hair and heavy is fine.  Condition after you wash, leave in conditioner that softens and offers sleekness to the hair and shine, plus a styling aid that will create shine, soft and smooth.  Those of you that have course hair you may put a gloss/polish on when your hair is dry.  Men can do the same and use a water soluble Gel to help keep your hair in place.

Hair Products for fine or thin damaged hair

Hair Products for fine or thin damaged hair you would want more protein than hydration, unless you are dried out from being damaged. You want proteins to build strength in addition to cutting those dead ends off. Deep conditioning with heat is good but with fine hair I think a good leave in conditioner works better.
In my salon I recommend Scruples White Tea Miracle Foam leave in conditioner, it helps in restoring hair strength and adds body to the hair even if it is damaged.  Protecting your hair from environmental damage and heated tools used on your hair with styling is a must.

Flaky Scalp

Flaky Scalp can be caused from dandruff, dry scalp, and or hair styling product residue.  Generally dandruff is present on an oily scalp.  Dry scalp can be treated with coconut oils or other scalp moisturizing oils that can help the flaking.  If you use water soluble hair products that will avoid any residue flaking.

Does Your Color Fade Quickly?

Does Your Color Fade Quickly?  If you have bleached areas in on your hair and you do not fill your hair before color, or deep condition first, or add some pigment in your hair color you do risk color fading quicker.  You also need to go a shade darker if you are very light or gray.  If you have healthy hair any chemical process always takes better, so remember to keep your hair trimmed and conditioned for better results.

Low Lites / Hi Lites

Getting Low Lites with Hi Lites can bring a bold contrast and a subtle.  Some blonde's are so blonde they need to break it up with darker blonde's so they stay a blonde and don't look so washed out.  Some like to add dark for the contrast and helps to cover some of the grays peering through and for regrowth issues.  You don't see the roots so much coming in when you have low lites.  Bold can very bold, with dark brown, black, dark reds or dark plums and burgundy can look great with blonde's too!

Putting Bright Colors In Your Hair

Putting bright colors in your hair is a fashion trend right now, pinks are in.  If you have dark hair you will have to bleach up the section you plan to do pink.  Depending on the product you use and the color and condition of your hair will determine how long the color will last.  There are other options to consider;  You may want to consider feathers or clip in hair wefts of different colors if you are not a candidate to that type of service or your job wont allow you to have it permanently, plus the hair wefts and feathers wont fade as color will.

Perms and Body Waves

There are several differant wraps for perms to achieve differant type of curls.  Dont mistake a body wave with a perm, its all about the perm wrap.  There are Texturize Perms that are more gentle and are amonia free but keep in mind it is for texture not curl, great alternative for those that just want some fullness and body.

Styling Your Hair

When styling your hair be sure your hair is completely dry. When you dry your hair the heat from the blow dryer makes your hair feel dry.  Always let your hair cool a little than feel to see if your hair is dry.  If your hair is not completely dry you will not beable to style your hair properly and your style will fall.

Summer Pony's

Summer Pony Tails are cooler to wear and fashionable if you put some curl in them or pony pieces to attach that gives you more hair.  Wrap a section of you hair around the band holding your pony so you don't see it and it looks more stylish.  You can use fun ribbon, sparkly bands or beads that are strung to wrap around the pony to give it a little pop.  Enjoy those Pony's this summer!

Curls Are In...........

Curls are in style right now and how much fun you can have with curl.  You can have a controlled curl which you achieve by using curling irons and rollers, barrel pin curls etc.  If you are putting curl in your hair remember using a thermal spray will work well and remember the bigger the section you take to put in the roller or the curling iron the bigger the curl you will get.

What bang is for you...

What bang is for you that works for your hair type and hair line?  Unless you have straight hair bangs can be challenging especially in humid weather.  If your front hairline does not have peaks and curves bangs will work for you.  If you do have peaks or curves side bangs can work.  Cutting blunt will give you a full bang, point cut will give you a softer edge without looking too straight across.  If you are having a side bang you can slide cut and point cut it so it falls soft and blends and flows into the side of your hair.  You can angle your bang any way you want.  Thick or thin bangs, it all can work!

what conditioner should you use?

If you have thick course hair, or very dry hair use a thicker creamy conditioner that contains hydrolyzed wheat protein, oils, and panthenol is good also, very healing.  If you have a thinner fine texture hair a finishing rinse which is not very thick is good.  If you have thin fine textured hair and you are very damaged a leave in conditioner with panthenol is not heavy on your hair and will help heal as well as other proteins in the ingredients.  One thing to remember unless you have extremely oily hair you should condition regularly.

Trimming your hair while growing it out

Its important to know to trim your hair while you are growing it out.  If you don't trim your ends they eventually split and break and that is how you get thin ends.  You can get a "dusting" which is a very small trim.  You will see healthy hair growth results when you condition and cut/dust regularly.  Dont be afraid to get the intitial cut to get your hair in shape to grow it out, you will see quicker results!

How often do you trim your hair

The hairdressing rule basically is trimming your hair every 6 weeks.  If you are wearing your hair in a short style most often people get it cut every 4 weeks, depending on how it grows out.  If you have a good hair cut it will grow out nicely and you benefit with a few different looks as it grows.

Flat Head

If you suffer from the flat head especially on top, there is hope to get volume.  Use a light weight moose, gel, or root lifter/volume foam - for curly hair;  using a product by Scruples called Silk Control is the answer.  Smooths friz while still giving volume.  Make sure you blow dry your hair in the opposite direction like upside down and be sure the roots get dry.  After drying the hair take horizontal 1" sections using the flat iron quickly sliding the iron at the root half way up the hair shaft to achieve some lift.  You can lightly mist a light weight hair spray through your hair first.  You can also spray you hair at the root and use a cool temp blow dryer to dry and seal the lift.  Works great :)  Looking for good products to use, look for my shopping cart coming soon at www.tropicalwaveshairsalon.com

updo with some friends part 2

I talked about going with friends or a friend and get a fun updo and go for lunch and shopping. If you are on a budget I mentioned to go clearance shopping.  Well you know you could call different salons and see who would help you have your day on your budget and do your hair for cheaper, an updo once for you and your friends at an affordable price :)  Personally, I would love the idea of a few friends to come in together and do a casual up do.  The positives are you may find a new salon and they may find a new client, you look great and the the salon just made some money with hopes you will tell your friends!

Do you and your stylist communicate part 2

Letting your stylist know you a little bit helps in thinking of a style for you.  Some styles are funky, concervative, sassy, classic.  Some will work for your hair or require some primping to achieve the look you want.  You may not want to take the time, you may like to primp.  If we as stylist understand your time schedules and what you normally do in a day we will know better how the style you like will work for you.

Support your hairdresser

There are times with the economy and holidays that business gets slow.  One thing to remember, if you have a stylist you like be sure to go in often enough to support her/him and salon you go to so they can stay in business.  I know its tempting to save money when you can but be sure its worth it to go to the cheaper place or having a friend family member to do it.  Just a thought when you working your budget.
